HUMAN INTEREST:
Following a 2002 season filled with personal records, Courtney Babcock continued and improved on that success into 2003 by breaking two Canadian records. Her season began with setting the Canadian National record in the 10,000m at the Cardinal Invitational in May, a record which had stood for 15 years. The season culminated with an 8th place finish in the 5000m at the World Championships in Paris, another national record, and missing the medal podium by only 2 seconds. Babcock then followed the latter performance by running a personal best and third fastest ever behind only Olympic Bronze medalists, Lynn Williams and Angela Chalmers, in the 1500m the following week in Brussels. She has proven to be a very versatile athlete and a leader for the Canadian team heading into the Olympics in Athens.

Courtney was an NCAA champion and eight-time All-American while at the University of Michigan and currently trains with fellow Canadians Vicky-Lynch Pounds, Andrea Grove and Nathalie Cote. Babcock didn’t start running competitively until her last year of high school at BSS when she joined UTTC…she graduated from the University of Michigan in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, and an emphasis on Sports Broadcasting…her father Larry also went to the University of Michigan where he played hockey and was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1964 Entry Draft…She is very close to her family and is inspired by her parents who have always encouraged her to reach her goals and go after her dreams…mother Dorothy is a homemaker….has two sisters, Alexandra and Whitney and one brother Blair, all of whom are also very athletic…enjoys photography.
